If you've heard about the Tiger Woods scandal, you may have also heard how one of his alleged mistresses, Rachel Uchitel, told her friends that the two had "crazy Ambien sex."
Strangely, popping the prescription sleep aid before lovemaking seems to be becoming a new sexual trend, and according to Hannah Seligson's Dec. 8th, 2009 article "Is Ambien Sex Hotter?" published in The Daily Beast, it is supposed to make sex "crazier, hotter and more erotic."
Ambien, according to its website at ambiencr.com, is a "2-layer, controlled-release prescription sleep medication." Listed among its side affects include behavioral changes, citing the drug may cause "more outgoing or aggressive behavior than normal."
The website continues to give the warning that "sleepwalking, and eating or driving while not fully awake, with memory loss for the event, as well as abnormal behaviors such as being more outgoing or aggressive than normal, confusion, agitation, and hallucinations may occur."
"Ambien is like LSD or Ecstasy; you definitely feel a little bit of a buzz," said Devin Dove, founder of ambienoutrage.com, to The Daily Beast in the article "Is Ambien Sex Hotter?" posted in Dec 2009. "You feel a euphoria when you take it."
Dove was involved in a car crash while under the influence of Ambien, and has dedicated his site to public awareness of the risks in taking the drug.
Along with Woods, a few other celebrities have reportedly used the drug. Jack Nicholson and Heather Locklear both had incidents involving driving while Ambien. John Stamos had a disastrous interview on Australian TV after taking it, and singer Pete Wentz admitted setting his house on fire while having an Ambien-induced hallucination. Ambien was also found in the late Heath Ledger's apartment after his death in 2008.
Multiple sites have posts from anonymous bloggers describing their "Ambien Sex" experiences. A nameless poster on manmade.com told how, while on Ambien, she gets "almost a high [and] lose inhibitions."
