Are you politically savvy? If you are, you're sure to like Vampire Weekend's second album Contra. But don't worry! Even those of you who can't tell the difference between the donkey and the elephant can still enjoy this tastefully construed masterpiece.
The album was released January 12th - and simply screams rebellion.
Contra has already reached number one on the Billboard 200 albums. Clever lyrics, classy names, and a whole lot of outrageous dance beats for those of you who can't help but to tap your feet are what await.
Fans around the world grew eager when the band announced the new album nearly two years after their first self-titled album back in 2008. It's not surprising that four young rockers from an Ivy League institution are more than likely to produce amazing sounds - all graduates of Columbia University - but the boys waited until after to really put the band out there.
The title Contra comes from a right wing, Nicaraguan militant group formed in opposition to Marxist rule.
The sound is much different than that of the first album in a way that likely none of their fans expected. Though difficult to describe, the word "mature" comes to mind. It's less disco and more rock; less beat but more edge. And don't get me wrong! The beats are fabulous. Contra has given us proof that Vampire Weekend can create phenomenal music without the eccentric use of synthesizers and a billion guitars. They introduce new sounds with instruments like the steel drum, which really enhances the feel of the music.
The best song of the album is undoubtedly, "Holiday." It's a feel-good track that will make you yearn for the summertime. The beat is fantastic and will make you want to dance. The second is "Cousins." This was released as the first single from Contra and is probably the most well-known song thus far. There are a few songs that are unexpected, such as "White Sky" and "Diplomat's Son" because the feeling they give is so mature. You'll wish you were lying on a beach with a martini in your hand just listening to sound of the waves crashing.
Overall, Vampire Weekend produces an amazing second album. Hopefully this is one of many more to come. Surely this kind of music isn't for everybody, but everyone should give it a try. You might be surprised at the kinds of sounds that will capture your attention. Contra is available for order online as well as in most music stores. You can even get a free listen to the entire album on their website.
