Welcome Paw Print readers to the first Setter Stage of 2009. This week I take a step onto the basketball court with women's basketball junior, Jacqueline Gogel. So Jackie, I have to ask, how do you feel about being the first athlete to do a Setter Stage interview in 2009?
Jacqueline Gogel- I was surprised at first because I'm not on the court that often, but I always read the paper to see who the Setter Stage athlete is. I definitely feel honored.
AP- Most students went home for winter break, however, both the men's and women's basketball teams kept playing during the time off. So even with all the basketball, what was the best part of your break?
JG- There was a lot of basketball, but we won a lot of games so that was a definite positive. The team also did this "grab bag" thing to pass time, and that was a lot of fun.
AP- I know we are almost one month into the New Year, but do you have any resolutions for the next eleven months?
JG- This is going to be weird, but I try not to make resolutions. I try to be a good person year-round.
AP- Alright, so let's talk basketball. How long have you been playing?
JG- I feel like I have been playing forever, but I want to say I played for recreation leagues in second or third grade, and then played in big basketball leagues from fourth grade on.
AP- Sounds good, have you played any other sports along the way?
JG- I actually came to Pace on a soccer scholarship, but eventually I just wanted play basketball more, and I also run track.
AP- What are you favorite sports to watch on TV?
JG- My favorite sport to watch have to be college basketball, and I'm starting to get into football. My friends, family, and boyfriend all love the New York Giants, so I've been sucked in.
AP- So before a game, do you have any pre-game rituals?
JG- I always put my sock on a certain way, and Brittany Huggins always seems to be dancing around. So those are my rituals, putting on my socks, and watching Brittany dance.
AP- In practicing for basketball, what is your least favorite exercise routine?
JG- Definitely reverse sprints, those are the worst. They always seem to be the punishment runs during the season, too.
