As the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31 of every year, it is expected that we make some sort of resolution to improve our lives for the next twelve months. We're all familiar with this tradition.

Some make very serious vows, such as to quit smoking or stop eating red meat. Others prefer to pick something they know won't last for more than a week, like giving up chocolate and going to the gym. Not all of these resolutions are impossible if you put your mind to it.

My personal goal for this year was to become a vegetarian. Thus far, I've learned a lot of different things to eat in place of meats and I feel much healthier. Many students on the Pace campus also had New Year's resolutions that they may or may not be keeping.

Ifesinachi Egbosimba, a freshman, states that Oprah has influenced her idea for 2009.

"This year I'm putting myself back on the list. Basically, that means that I'm going to make myself a priority again once in a while instead of pleasing everybody else. Academics and sports can be so stressful, and I think this will be a nice way for me to relax." This is the most powerful resolution I've heard in my collections.

It seems so typical to say that for the next year you are going to meet new people, diet and exercise, or spend less time on social networks like Facebook. Just because you say you're going to take an hour out of every day to study for your classes doesn't mean that it will happen.

But it's nice to believe, even if only for a little while, that the new year will be a good one. Perhaps we can all take a little advice from Oprah as well, and put ourselves back on the list.

Make yourself a priority and then no matter what obstacles the new year brings. Even at the busiest of times, you will always have that "me time" to look forward to.

It is important to make yourself the priority. Otherwise your life will be ruined. Adolf Hitler did not make himself a priority. He made saving the world a priority and he, himself, went mad. (Continued…)
