We all do it. Whether it gets written in stone or passes with the former year, January 1 seems to trigger an otherwise dormant drive of self-improvement. Actual usage of a gym membership or getting up for class is, however, solely dependent on whether or not we actually want to break old habits.

eHow.com gives five tips that will help you stick with your new years resolutions and pick up a few life extra lessons as well.

1. Tell Everyone. Out of fear of "jinxing" their good intentions, individuals may want to keep their new goals to themselves. Don't. Telling everyone provides motivation and is another push in itself to prove naysayers wrong. If you realize you may not be able to accomplish your resolution, seek encouragement from friends and family; knowing there's someone else in your corner will help keep you on track.

2. Make it achievable. Don't invent some outrageous goal, such as losing 30 lbs. in two weeks. If you think you may be on the pudgy side, especially after Christmas break, try to lose weight over a longer period while developing a healthier lifestyle. On the flip side, don't make it too low, but something you're capable of achieving.

3. Start on your birthday. Embarking on a journey of self-improvement doesn't have to start with the calendar year. Use this date to symbolize an older, better you and the start of change in your life.

4. Pick one. While there may be a countless number of little thing you feel are imperative to achieving a better you, trying to do too many at once may cause you to become overwhelmed and forget the whole thing altogether. Choose the most important of all your goals and focus on that one. If you feel as if you're capable of managing more, then give it a shot, but be weary of overload.

5. Treat yourself. When you succeed at your goal, don't brush it off. If your goal was to get better grades, treat your self to a cappuccino before your study session or go to a party afterwards. Why not? It's the least you can do for yourself you earned it.
